Charles G. Irion Performs Medical Assessment For Project C.U.R.E. In Mumbai, India

As an advisory board member and a trained and certified needs assessment representative, Charles G. Irion’s latest mission was in Mumbai, India. The city of Mumbai, is a great port city, situated on the west coast of the Indian peninsula.  One of India’s dominant urban centers, it’s one of the largest and most densely populated cities in the world.  Therefore, the medical needs are great.   Major health problems in the city include AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, chronic respiratory ailments, and gastro-intestinal diseases related to poor sanitation and hygiene. 

Working closely with Harvest India, Irion assessed two hospitals.  One located in Mumbai and another in Tenali.  The Phil-Am Lions Club donated over 250 pair of neutralized eye glasses for children in an orphanage, and Irion himself brought over fifty pounds of clothing for children in need.

Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital in Dharampur

What an amazing two days traveling, assessing village clinics, and the Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital in Dharampur for projectcure.org. I was also honored to meet the guru and spiritual leader of Jainism. Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshbhai Jhaveri!!

 Villagers lined up for medical exams and the free children clothing I brought with me. The smiles were infectious !

 What an honor to be able to talk to the guru. He had many questions . I was also honored the night before to participate in the ceremony to the 3 gods. I will always cherish this opportunity to serve and grow spiritually! Thanks to you and Chad Mehta

  This is what the villagers wear when it's raining and they are working in the rice fields. They all laughed and invited me to come work with them!!!!

 What a great opportunity to work together with lions locally èhere in india to serve others. I handed over 600 pairs of children's glasses for the less fortunate. The local doctors and Phx Phil-Am LionsClub lions will make sure they are used well!

Medical Mission in Mumbai, India

I finally arrived in mumbai late last night with 600 pairs of donated children's eyeglasses from Phx Phil-Am LionsClub and lions international. The staff from love and care picked me up last night, Chad Mehta and Chandni Mehta thanks so much.  I'll be assessing one of their hospitals today and tomorrow. It's a four hour drive!

Award Winning Author, Entrepreneur and Adventurer Headed to San Pablo City, Philippines for Medical Mission

Charles Irion as a Director of The 3000 Club will be Assisting Doctors and Nurses during a Cervical Cancer Treatment and Education Mission

Charles Irion along with volunteers from The 3000 Club Phoenix, Arizona supported by The 3000 Club Philippines with local town doctors and surgeons will perform checkups for 450 women with particular focus on cervical cancer awareness and prevention through pap smear.  Those found with cervical pre-lesions can be treated with cryo therapy.  Those found with lesions will be referred to tertiary hospitals for further treatment/surgery.  The club will also be performing minor surgeries if necessary, as well as providing one extra nutritious meal during the duration of the mission for mothers, pregnant women and children ten and below.

Cervical cancer is the fifth most common cancer for women and about every two minutes, a woman will die of cervical cancer somewhere around the world.  In the Philippines, it is estimated that 12 Filipino women die of cervical cancer every day, while around five out of 10 women suffering from cervical cancer may die within five years.  In a year, around 6,000 cases and 4,349 deaths due to cervical cancer are documented. 

It’s Charles Irion and The 3000 Club’s hope this mission will help decrease the number of women dying of cervical cancer and help improve the health and well being of indigent women and children by bringing to them health services and education which otherwise they would be able to obtain.

Entrepreneur and Award Winning Author Charles G Irion to Assist with Hundreds of Free Cataract Surgeries in the Philippines

Charles G. Irion, a Director of the Phil-Am Lions Club, along with members of the club, will be performing approximately 300 cataract surgeries. 

In February Charles G. Irion will be participating in a medical mission in Zambales, Philippines to provide free cataract surgeries to needy patients.  This is the 11^th cataract medical mission between the Philippines and Mexico.  Historically, the Phil-Am Lion’s Club always breaks their record.  In 2013, they helped 223 patients with vision screenings, leading a group of more than 10 volunteers.  The process is tedious, having to sort through thousands of glasses so that patients are given a pair of free corrective glasses after the surgery.  During their last mission over 9000 pair of glasses were dispensed!  Irion personally will be working with doctors to scan and give eye tests before and after surgery.  Project C.U.R.E. donated some of the medical supplies – Charles Irion is a Director of Project C.U.R.E.

Lion’s Club International was founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones from Arizona.  It’s the largest service humanitarian club in the world with a membership of approximately 1.3 million.  The current President of LCI, Joseph Preston is from Arizona as well.

WWII Civilian Pilots Trained at Thunderbird in Glendale

These days, Luke Air Force Base is the most well-known military installation in the Phoenix area.  But back in the 1940s, another base to the east was filling a vital role: training civilian pilots to serve in the Army during World War II.  Thunderbird Field 1 was located at what today is the corner of 59th Avenue and Greenway Road in Glendale.  Back then, though, it was an isolated piece of desert land - until general Henry "Hap" Arnold came along.

In 1940, with the war raing in Europe and Japan becoming a threat in the Pacific, Arnold realized the U.S. would  need to bolster its air power if it were to enter the war.  Time was of the essence, so Arnold recruited the founders of Southwest Airways (later called Pacific Air Lines), Leland Hayward and John Connelly, and Life magazine photographer John Swope to help find investors for the project.

With Hollywood stars such as Jimy Steward, Robert Taylor and Henry Fonda on board, construction on Thunderbird Field 1 got under way on January 2, 1941 - nearly a year before Japan attached the U.S at Pearl Harbor.  Arizona's clear skies, combined with its relatively sparse population at the time, made the Valley of the Sun an ideal location for the air base.

Well-known artist illard Sheets designed the layout of the base, and from the air, it resembled the thunderbird found in the mythologies of several native American peoples.  The field began operations March 22, 1941, with a first class of 59 civilian pilots.  Swope, a former ilitary pilot himself, was among the trainers.

Before long, Thunderbird had expanded to two satellite airfields: Falcon Field in Mesa and Thunderbird Field 2 in Scottsdale.  By the time the war ended in September 1945, more than 16,000 Allied pilots, including hundreds of Chinese airmen who served in Chiang Kaishek's army, had been trained at the Thunderbird fields.

Today, Falcon Field is owned by the city of Mesa, and Thunderbird Field 2 is now Scottsdale Airport.  As for Thunderbird Field 1, the federal government sold it to a retired Army Air Forces commander, Lt. General Barton K. Yount, for $1 after World War II ended.  Yount established the American Institue for Foreign Trade at the site.

Today, you might know that learning instituion by a different name: The Thunderbird School of Global Management.  Looking at the school's campus, you might have a hard time imagining that it once was a bustling military base - this is, if it didn't still include Thunderbird Field 1's circa-1941 aircraft control tower, reopened on Veteran's Day in 2011 after an extensive renovation.  The tower houses a restaurant, an alumni and veterans gallery, and a student common area.
